Smaller cables save valuable space to reduce cooling costs

Cooling is a critical issue for Data Centre managers facing increased pressure to reduce both cost and carbon emissions. The data centre cabling is often installed under the same floor void which is also used to supply the cool air, and the large volumes of cable involved can significantly restrict the airflow, increasing costs.

Nexans has several solutions to minimise this problem.

Micro-Bundle Fibre Cables 

Flexible, reduced diameter Micro-Bundle cables are lightweight and pliable, making them easy to arrange in patch panels versus traditional Loose Tube cables. Their small diameter also reduces the valuable space needed to accommodate each cable, which improves air flow to reduce cooling costs.

The smaller tube and better fibre arrangement also leads to better skew making them better suited for 40G/100G migration and demonstrating that round cables are equally good as as ribbon cable for parallel optics.

DC50 10G Copper Zone Cabling

DC50 is a new thinner cable which has been specifically developed for data centres. The screened cable makes use of 26AWG solid conductors and supports all existing Ethernet applications from 100MB to 10Gigabit over 50m link lengths. 

As conductor thickness and distance support are closely related, by reducing the supported distance to 50m, the cable diameter can be reduced to a nominal diameter of only 5.9mm compared to 7.6mm for a standard Cat 6A  cable. In high density environments where large cable bundles are installed, this benefit is multiplied and an overall space saving of 40% can be achieved.
